Hasan Minhaj reacted to speculation surrounding a potential rift on the set of It Ends with Us.
Hasan played Marshall in the movie adaptation of the famous Colleen Hoover novel, which earned over $100 million in the global box office in its first week alone. However, the success of the movie was not without its controversy — including rumors that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the lead actors as well as the movie’s producer and director respectively, butted heads throughout production.
Hasan still follows Justin on Instagram, making him the only major cast member to do so. In a new interview with Esquire, he said of the movie’s success, “It’s a surreal, wild thing that I couldn’t even imagine…I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted it. I remember when Justin reached out to me and asked me to be part of the movie; he was so impassioned.”
When asked specifically about potential on-set discord, he replied, “I can’t speak to other people’s experience, but everybody was very professional and cool to me,” he says. “It was lovely and everybody was lovely, and it is just as disillusioning for me, because I’m like, what happened? Wait, what’s going on?”
Amid his own personal controversies and the movie’s success despite the rumors, he said, “It was a strange, bizarre year, and I am a comic deep down because there are moments where I’m laughing at it.”
